So if i volunteer at a place, then i can put that on a resume to increase my chances of getting a job?

like if i volunteer at a library or non-profit thrift store, then i can use that to increase my chances of getting a real job right? like by putting it in my resume or telling the boss/manager who im trying to persuade to hire me?
